Can you please clarify how the earth work needed for shoulder backing will be paid.

Answer

Removal of asphalt pavement and earth, subgrade preparation for shoulder backing, and grading to drain is roadway excavation (earthwork) under Caltrans section 19, “Earthwork,” as referenced in section 5-01 of the project special provisions. Per section 5-05, this project will not measure or pay earthwork separately.
